  • Welcome to the Mariothon

The Mariothon is an annual 72 hour fundraising event in support of Starlight Children's Foundation. So far we have raised over £4,500 for Starlight and thousands of people have logged on to watch, chat and donate. Now it's time to complete the trilogy!

Log on and watch us live, 24/7 during the event; we'll be broadcasting from September 26th - 29th, 2013, kicking off at 15:00 BST (British Summer Time). Between the Mariothon Jukebox, Mario Kart tournaments, Creepy Cornish Poetry and of course the games themselves, we've got loads to keep you entertained!

Want to know more? Use the buttons below to navigate around our interact panel and discover everything this year's Mariothon has to offer.

With Give as you Live™ you can turn every pound you spend online into funds for Starlight.

  • Donation Targets

Whenever the second console isn't being used for Mario Kart, Speed Runs or On Demand gaming (available from the Jukebox) we'll play through Super Mario Sunshine, Super Paper Mario, the green power stars in Super Mario Galaxy 2 and the insanely difficult Worlds A - D in Lost Levels, but only if you unlock the levels first! Donations are the the key to us playing more than ever before and if we reach £2500 we'll even try to beat possibly the toughest level ever created: the final star in Super Mario Galaxy 2.
  • Dance DJ Dance!

credits 350 restrictions Not available during quiet periods

Our dear camera and sound/tech guy Swen usually spends the whole Mariothon hanging out in Kev's conservatory running the feed. Use this item to bring him in from the cold and get him doing a little dance just for you...

  • Squid Ink

credits 150 restrictions Not available during quiet periods

Remember in Mario Kart where the pesky squid pops up and obscures your view of the track with his ink for a while? Remember the inevitable crashes and chaos it caused?

    Yeh, that...

  • Bespoke Limericks

credits 100 restrictions Available any time of the day

Request this item and we'll write you a limerick based on your name and any additional information you want to provide us with. Depending on the time of day we'll either sing it back to you or give you a creepy-free* poetry reading.

*Technically a lie, not an actual guarantee.

  • On Demand Gaming

credits 500 restrictions Available any time of the day

Tell us the game and the person you want to see playing it and this item will force them to play for 10 minutes. Anyone can add time to the clock by selecting the top-up option too! Whether you want to see Bobby suffer on the original Super Mario Bros. or relive Andrew's greatest gaming moments in Mario 64 they'll take the hot seat on the second console and perform at your behest.

Some of the best moments during the first two 'thons were to be had playing Mario Kart against our viewers. If you choose Mario Kart from the On Demand gaming section, you get to play a Grand Prix against some of our number. If there's lots of interest then we'll get some big races going! You can also play Super Smash Bros against any of us - it's gonna be, well, chaos!

  • Mario Kart

    advert

We'll be having a mini-competition amongst ourselves every day - each day's winner will have a handicap on the following day to even out the challenge. The overall winners will go into the Great Mariothon Kart Championship on the final day. Here we'll face viewers who have held their own competitions for the privilege of joining us, challenging to win the grand prize!

We haven't got a hope of winning the main event if last year's anything to go by, but it'll be fun trying!

  • Unlock more games and levels!

We'll also celebrate every £500 with increasingly longer games of Mario Party 8. The action in the parties is pretty chaotic but you can really make it difficult to predict who will win by using the Jukebox Player Roulette to shuffle the controllers around!

And if that still isn't enough, the occasional donation target will even bring a showcase speed run for Lost Levels, New Super Mario Bros Wii (team play) and Super Mario World!

  • Marathon

Our aim is to complete 13 games this year! We're starting on the original Nintendo Entertainment System and working our way up to the recent Wii U. In fact, the Wii U is so recent that most of us haven't even played the latest games so expect us to struggle more than ever before as the hours go by. Check out the schedule for approximate times of when we'll reach each game to make sure you don't miss your favourites!

    games
  • The Games

    advert

This year we've got twice the consoles and at least twice the action! Our main console will be running the Mariothon main games 24/7 without interruption - all the old favourites, and a few new faces amongst them. See the "Marathon" tab below for more info.

The second console has loads of different stuff planned, including Mario Kart, speeds runs, "On Demand" gaming and more. Check out the "Unlock More" tab for further details.

Speed Runs - Super Mario Bros. 1, 2 and 3 can all be beaten in pretty quick times if you use the warp features, so we've decided to see which of us can beat these games the fastest. We all have 3 attempts at each game, with no mulligans for screwing up the start. Experience and practice will count for something, but it will be the ability to perform under pressure that will really separate the men from the boys here.

  • Mario Kart

credits 200 restrictions Not available during quiet periods

Possibly the best bit of the first Mariothon was playing Mario Kart with some of our viewers - so much so that we've decided to do it a whole load more this year!

All you need to do is pick up an entry to the race with this Jukebox item, and we'll then include you in the next Mario Kart session that we play. You can see the scheduled sessions on the Mariothon TV schedule. If we get enough demand, we might slip in a few more Mario Kart sessions in between games - watch the live feed for details!

So go on, spend some Mariothon Jukebox credits on a race entry and come teach us how to play Mario Kart! You'll get at least one Grand Prix for your credits, and more if there's time. The viewer with the greatest total of Grand Prix points over the course of the Mariothon (prior to Saturday evening) will earn themselves a wild card entry into the Great Mariothon Kart Competition - points are cumulative over multiple Grand Prix entries, so come and give us a race!

  • Mario Gymnasium

credits 300 restrictions Not available during quiet periods

We're all likely to put on a few pounds over a fairly sedentary 72 hours - help us work off the inches by forcing us into the Mariothon Gymnasium! You can choose the activity, and we'll all perform it live for your viewing amusement.

  • Creepy Poetry

credits 300 restrictions Available any time of the day

Those of you watching last year will have seen the Cornish versions of "Call Me Maybe", affectionately dubbed "Call Me Drekly!" and the subsequent creepy song versions we provided for your listening "delight". This year you can request a Mariothon adaptation of any song you like - just let us know when you purchase it in the jukebox.

  • Sing Us a Song!

credits 300 restrictions Not available during quiet periods

Pick any song you like and we'll attempt to recreate it in a vaguely sincere style - there's a box in the jukebox that you can put your choice into when you buy the item, but if you're struggling for ideas you can check out a few suggestions from last year below.

    Mariothon Blues
    American Pie
    500 Miles
    Lumbarjack Song
    Witch Doctor
We heartily recommend the Mariothon Blues. It's different every time!
Don Mclean's classic, like you've never heard it before...
...and I would complete 500 levels, and I...
    The classic Monty Python song.
Ooh Eee, ooh ahh ahh, etc. etc.
  • Player Roulette

credits 200 restrictions Available any time of the day

Really like a particular player? Getting bored of someone's painstakingly tedious progress through a level? Want to wake someone up from their first nap in 30 hours? Get your hands on Player Roulette!

With this Jukebox item, you can spin the wheel to decide who takes the controller at any time, and the change will happen the moment the item purchase registers on our database! No-one is off limits (apart from the guy who's left the house!) - the guy cooking, the guy eating, the guy sat on the couch - if the wheel picks them, they'll run towards the controller as fast as their B-button will let them. Or something.

Don't you just love being in control?

(Extra points if you can identify the pop culture reference...)

  • Blindfold the Player

credits 200 restrictions Available any time of the day

Does what it says on the tin! Pick this item and we'll blindfold the player(s) until they beat the level, continue or lose 5 lives. The other Mariothoners are allowed to help with verbal instructions but it probably won't be much use unless they remember to shout "jump" early enough...

  • Random Action

credits 200 restrictions Not available during quiet periods

Choose this Jukebox item to generate a random result - we'll roll the dice and perform the resultant Jukebox activity! The potential outcomes for the random action generator are shown below:

    Random Action List
  • Mario Rap

credits 300 restrictions Not available during quiet periods

It's the Super Mario Bros. Super Show!

Most of you will probably be familiar with the Super Mario Bros. Super Show from the eighties - you can remind yourselves with this video!

Last year we attempted to recreate the dance in an improvised fashion, to glowing critical acclaim. (Well, it got a few donations and that's the same thing, right?!) This year we've gone bigger and better, and have pre-prepared the dance moves!

So if you want us to recreate a little bit of the eighties just for you then purchase this Jukebox item. There's no limit to how many times we'll perform this dance!

  • Mimic Mario

credits 300 restrictions Not available during quiet periods

Pick up this Jukebox item and you can make the whole group attempt to recreate Mario's on-screen action!

We'll all stand up (except the player controlling the action) and try to do whatever Mario does, be it run, jump or duck. Of course, we'll be re-enacting the movements on the spot as our living room isn't quite as large as Bowser's castle!

So go on, help us make fools of ourselves (again) and lets have some fun! We'll continue to mimic Mario for the duration of the level, and won't stop until the level is completed. This means that if Mario dies then the fun will start all over again!

A documentary series about Starlight Children's Foundation was produced and shown on Channel 5 from February to April 2011. If you would like to watch this heart-warming series then you can still see it here.

  • How Donations Help

    starlight2
Starlight receive no support from either the government or the national lottery, and rely on generous donations and fundraising events such as this one to be able to continue the fantastic work they do around the country.

You can see some examples of the wishes that Starlight have granted here

Here are some examples of what your donation can achieve:

    • £20 gives a hospitalised child the chance to escape into a world of fun at a Starlight Party
    • £25 pays for two children to laugh their way through a Starlight Pantomime
    • £50 brings a family together to enjoy a very special Starlight Escape out of hospital
    • £100 provides a Starlight Distraction Box which helps take a child’s mind off distressing medical procedures
    • £200 – £500 gives a seriously ill child the full star treatment on their wish including stretch limo
    • £2,500 enables a very ill child to experience the magic of swimming with dolphins
    • £3,000 would pay for a Starlight Fun Centre for your local hospital or hospice
  • Starlight

    starlight1starlight3
Starlight Children's Foundation are a charity that grant once-in-a-lifetime wishes to seriously or terminally ill children. These can be as varied as swimming with dolphins, meeting David Beckham or being a fireman for a day. These wishes are more than just a treat - they can change a sick child's life.

They also work to amuse and entertain over half a million children in hospitals and hospices around the country, with the aim of "giving children their childhood back". With the philosophy that happy children get better quicker, they aim to distract children from the pain, isolation and fear that can often be part of a serious illness.

We at Mariothon think that this is a great charity and an excellent cause to raise money for. Considering that one of Starlight's projects is to put a Wii in every children's ward and hospice in the UK, it also seemed an appropriate charity for a Mariothon, and indeed the whole gaming community, to support. Please give generously.

  • The Mariothon

The Mariothon is an annual 72 hour fundraising event in support of Starlight Children’s Foundation. The first two Mariothons have raised over £4000 for Starlight Children's Foundation, and have seen thousands of people log on to watch, chat, be entertained and even take part in the action. We can't wait to do it all again in 2013!

As always this year has lots of exciting new stuff, including Creepy Cornish Poetry (patent pending) and a completely revamped and updated Mariothon Jukebox - this is where you can spend the credits you earn by donating to make us bow to your every whim (or just look a bit silly!)

The Mariothon will be taking place from September 26th to September 29th, 2013. Things will be kicking off at 15:00 BST, and we’ll be online for each and every hour of the next seventy two.

  • Chaos

    advert

This is the place to come if you really want to spice things up a little... The items in the Chaos section of the Jukebox are designed to cause just that. You can make a different player take control of Mario at a very inopportune moment, take away all our level notes or even blindfold the guy with the controller! So go on, take a walk on the wild side, and get in touch with your devilish streak...

  • Music

    advert

This year the Mariothon is going even more musical...

Several of the Mariothon team like to think they're a bit musically inclined - Andrew and Chris play guitar, Mike plays bass, and several of the group can hold a tune. Choose items from this section of the jukebox to see us wax lyrical. You can see us recreate your favourite classic song in a relatively sincere manner, or choose some creepy poetry and see us "adapt" a track in our very own Mariothon way... ever heard two guys sing a duet of "Call Me Maybe" in a Cornish accent?!...

  • Action

    advert

Here's where you control the action - quite literally! Select an item from the Action section, and you'll get us off the sofa and creating spectacles of ourselves (even more so than we already are!) So do your bit for health and safety and help us avoid a DVT - choose an Action item. We can dance along with the bit of 80's nostalgia that is the Super Mario Bros Super Show in the Mario Rap, mimic Mario throughout a level or even just let the fates decide by rolling the dice on a random action - the choice is yours!

  • The Great Mariothon Kart Competition

    advert
It's back! Again we've invited various groups to hold their own Mario Kart competitions. They're then going to forward their champion to the Great Mariothon Kart Competition! The best of the best will be competing to win a copy of Rock Band for the Wii, and a full instrument pack, with a total value in excess of £200! You can watch the Grand Final live at about 21:00 BST on Saturday 28th of September. So what are you waiting for? Get your friends together and register a team!

  • Information

    advert

Here you can find all the other bits of information that don't really fit anywhere else. You can read about the Mariothon, and the players who are involved. Find out about the charity we're supporting and the amazing work that they do. Check out the awesome items we're auctioning, and find out how you can bid for them. There's also a little more information on the benefits of registering on the website, and an FAQ if there's anything left that we haven't covered!

  • The Great Mariothon Kart Competition

We are inviting university gaming societies, stores, or anyone who wants to host a Mario Kart competition to enter. It costs £5/person to enter, with the responsiblity lying with the host to pass it on through our virginmoneygiving site. The entrants then battle it out until a winner is declared.

The winners of each of these local competitions will be put forward into a grand final that will be broadcast live on the Mariothon. To add to the entertainment, one or two Mariothoners will race in the grand final as well, only they won't be racing to win but to avoid punishments for doing badly!

The Grand Final will occur at 21:00 BST on Saturday, 27th October.

  • Help

  • The Jukebox

This is where you get to decide what you want to see us do. Whether it's singing a song, doing a stupid dance or starting our very own Mario gymnasium, anything goes in the Jukebox!

Every donation you make to Starlight Children's Foundation via our Virgin Money Giving donation site will earn you credits (you need to have an account on this website in order to access them) - 100 credits for every £1 you donate. You can then spend your credits to control the on-screen action as you see fit!

So check through the list of ideas and decide what you'd like to see - we'll act on your Jukebox purchase as soon as possible after it occurs. Please check the info box attached to each jukebox item to find out whether any specific players need to be awake and around in order for your item to occur. Not all of us can sing you a ballad or play the guitar! (Well, at least not in a fashion that anyone would want to hear...) Hopefully the Jukebox will tell you if an item is currently unavailable due to "staffing issues", the game we're playing or some other confounding factor, but it's worth double-checking with us in the live feed prior to ordering the item if you really need to see it happen within the next few minutes.
